Bad news from UFC 168: Anderson Silva has broken his left leg in a likely career-ending injury. The break occurred when Silva fired off a left hook or round kick and Weidman reacted with a classic leg check, lifting his knee in a move popular in Wing Chun. Silva's leg snapped, ending the fight immediately and leaving fans horrified and shaken.
Warning: this video of Anderson Silva breaking his leg is a little disturbing.
Wing Chun Kung Fu does not use hook or round kicks because they are slower and less efficient than straight-line attacks such as the front kick Silva used to knock out Vitor Belfort at UFC 126. They are also easily defended by straight-line defenses such as Weidman's leg check or closing in on the opponent; if your opponent has mastered defending their centerline using a round kick will rarely end well for you.
Note that this is not the first time a circular kick has led to a broken shin in the Octagon: there are other videos like this one out there.
