The One Inch Punch and Wing Chun

Ip Chun on the Wooden Dummy
I am often asked to share little-known stories from the Wing Chun world. Here's one of my favorites:

On a visit to Kung Fu Magazine, one day the Editor told me a story about Ip Chun (Ip Man's eldest son) and the one-inch punch. He said he was on a flight to a Martial Arts Expo and happened to sit next to Ip Chun. Naturally, he asked Ip Chun about Bruce Lee and wanted to talk about the one-inch punch.

Ip Chun said the punch is from Wing Chun and teaches the student how to build explosive power in a small area. The Editor continued to ask for a more detailed explanation and Ip Chun finally said “ Let me show you, so you can understand."

The Editor and Ip Chun stood up in the aisle when the seat belt sign blinked off. Ip Chun grounded himself in the Wing Chun stance. He placed his hand against the man’s chest with his fingers extended and asked “Are you ready?" He then shifted his power into the punch...

The Editor went flying back through the aisle and smashed into the bathroom doorknob. The incident caused him a very painful back injury that lingered for several months.
