Martial Arts Testing and Ranks: September

This month, like every month, a number of our Kung Fu students tested for new levels.

In Wing Chun, ranking systems are at the discretion of the individual school. In Chinese martial arts, generally, there are only three standard ranks: Student, Disciple, and Master/Sifu. However, most schools elect to assign colored sashes to represent these different ranks, which provides students clear measures of their past progress and future goals. Rank systems also help foster a more formal learning environment through martial arts tests and promotions.

For our kids particularly, testing can be a nerve-wracking experience... which is why it's so great when they pass!

Just a few of the children are pictured. Here's a group shot of our Kung Fu adults holding up their new sashes, posing with Sifu Tei:

There's at least one future Sifu in here somewhere...
EDIT: 9/28/11 - here's another photo of a Dragon with his new sash after graduating from Tigers a few months ago:

Congratulations to all!

Demonstration before Films of Fury: The Kung Fu Movie-Movie at Singafest LA Film Festival

Our adults' Demo Team will perform before the screening of Films of Fury: The Kung Fu Movie-Movie at Singafest Asian Film Festival. Our demonstration will be geared toward fans of the Ip Man Wing Chun movies as well as the recently released Shaolin movie starring Jackie Chan.

The screening is on Sunday, October 2nd at 2:30 pm and is co-sponsored by Meniscus Magazine. Here's the synopsis from the documentary's website:

"Narrated by an original animated character, comically obsessed with Kung Fu movies, this vivid, action packed documentary feature reveals the legend, the lore and the loony of the most ridiculously exhilarating films ever made. Written by Ric Meyers, based on his book, “Films of Fury” tells the story of the genre from its ancient Peking Opera origins to its superhero-powered future, from “Enter the Dragon” to “Kung Fu Panda” with all its greatest stars including Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, James Bond and Jet Li and scenes from over 200 from the greatest martial art movies ever made."

Singafest is a young film festival that boasts sponsors such as LA Weekly, Fil-Am Creative, Bigfoot Corporation, Gilt Groupe, Sapporo beer, and more. Tickets are available here for the festival's events.

Aside from our demonstration, all of the movies at the festival will be of great interest to Asian film buffs - of which we have many at our school - so keep an eye out for us if you're attending.
